#PortraitSeries: Freso
Who are you and how do you contribute to Open Food Facts?

I’m Freso, a neurodivergent and queer elder millennial in southern Scandinavia, and I’m very opinionated on a lot of topics. 🙂
I’m currently contributing to Open Food (/Beauty/Products) Facts by adding and editing products I come across and doing some quality control things, mostly focusing on Scandinavian/Nordic markets (particularly Sweden and Denmark) and vegan and plant-based products.
In relation to this, I’ve been doing a chunk of work on the taxonomies, adding missing entries and translations, fixing issues I’ve come across, and just trying to make things a bit better.
This has also led me to poke at the Product Opener codebase, since some issues need more work than just editing taxonomies, and I’ve just begun poking around in the Python SDK.
Taxonomy : Taxonomy is a way of organizing information into categories to make it easier to find, understand, and use
What’s your main motivation to contribute to this effort?
I believe that free software and free/open data, just like veganism, are essential for a better world for everyone, and I want that world sooner rather than later. 🙂
I’m actually planning on making a series of video essays exploring this topic… eventually.
I also just like data.
I’ve also contributed to (and still contribute to) MusicBrainz and BookBrainz and other MetaBrainz projects, Open Library, Open Street Map, Wikidata/Wikipedia, and other open data projects (and even more non-data free software ones).
What do you do besides Open Food Facts activities?
I spend a lot of time on Twitch, I love to read, I’ve recently started dabbling in chess, and I do political activism.
I used to be more active with union work (IWW and SAC), but I’ve been on a bit of hiatus from that—I hope to pick that up again soon. I also contribute to other free software and data projects, as mentioned before.
One of my (very typical) neurodivergent traits is also just that I have/have had too many interests, so there’s always something somewhere that I want to do or get involved with.
