Spring News from the Open Food Facts Community

We hope you had a wonderful spring!
For those who missed our last newsletter on May 8, 2025, we have plenty to tell you about what’s happening within the Open Food Facts community. But first, here are two events not to be missed:
🗓️ in May

20 May from 14h to 15h (Europe/Paris timezone)
Our first Science Webinaire (in French), on how Open Food Facts is used in science, and how you can contribute.
If you are a researcher, or have researchers in your network, do not hesitate to sign up & invite!

If you missed our webinar in English on May 6, 2025, here’s the replay :
🗓️ in September

13-14 September – Open Food Facts Day 2025 🥁
Location: Paris, France – Académie du Climat
We are delighted to have secured this beautiful venue again (for free!). Although we tried to look at options in a different city, we did not manage to find a suitable venue & location. If you have leads, please let us know!
👉 On the menu : Community Lightning Talks (but not only) !
You can submit yours on the event’s wiki page or to contact@openfoodfacts.org.
💬 You can also contribute to this questionnaire to help us imagine this weekend together.
🥚 Special Operation – An egg-sploration to collect as many prices of eggs as possible! 🥚
After the Nutella Challenge, the Open Prices team is challenging us to a new product: eggs! 🍳
There has been a lot of talk around eggs lately (egg shortages, mad prices, #eggflation in some countries), so we’re on a mission to gather prices around the world and make them available to everyone.
👉 Learn more about this challenge, and check out some feedback from the previous one around hazelnut spreads — one of the most scanned products on Open Food Facts!

New Nutri-Score finally passed in the French legislation
It’s been a long time coming, but on the 16th of March 2025, France adopted the new algorithm of the Nutri-Score (not without struggle!).
This updated version is more strict on certain food groups, and it’s estimated that 30-40% of products’ scores will evolve as a result.
Producers now have 2 years to adjust the Nutri-Scores of their products. In the meantime, Open Food Facts allows anyone to see the latest version, because transparency shouldn’t have to wait!

Open Food Facts’ stand at the FOSDEM event in Brussels last February was a big success, thanks to the many visitors and our wonderful volunteers. The goal of the event is to provide free and open source software developers and communities a place to meet.

Tools – Nutrisight
Thanks to the DRG4Food programme, funded by the European Commission, and in collaboration with the GoCoCo app, we developed a model capable of extracting nutrition data with a high degree of accuracy.
