Launched in October 2017, Nutri-score has a double objective:
✔️ To inform consumers’ choices regarding the food products they purchase
✔️ To encourage professionals to reformulate their recipes to improve their nutritional quality
An effective logo
🔹In January 2025, 1.416 companies in France were involved in the Nutri-Score system.
🔹In 2022, a US study demonstrated that the Nutri-Score system improves the nutritional quality of new products launched into the market.
🔹A recent model of OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) estimated that if the voluntary adoption of the logo were at the European level (27 countries), nearly 2 million cases of non-communicable diseases would be avoided between 2023 and 2050.
➡️ Thus changes to the calculation method to better reflect scientific knowledge and official dietary recommendations.
🔎 Specifically, what’s changing?
The calculation method remains the same: it’s based on the nutrition facts table (found on the back of packaging) and certain ingredients.
↪️ For 100g or 100ml of product, points are awarded based on the content of elements to limit (e.g., calories, saturated fat) and elements to promote (e.g., fiber, fruit, vegetable, and pulse content).
➡️ What changes in the new calculation are the thresholds for awarding these points and the inclusion of certain ingredients that were previously excluded, such as red meat and the presence of sweeteners in beverages. It is estimated that between 30 and 40% of products will see their score change.

➡️ Companies have 2 years to apply the new Nutri-Score to their packaging.

On the Open Food Facts website and app, you’ll find the latest version of the Nutri-Score.
So, remember to compare products in stores with the score displayed in the app, with a simple scan.
➡️ A “new calculation” box has been created to clearly indicate which products have a score calculated using the new Nutri-Score. Manufacturers have the option of adding this label to products that use the new Nutri-Score, but this is optional.
