🚀 Open Products Facts: We’ve surpassed 40,000 products, a huge thank you to the AFNIC Foundation!

You’re familiar with Open Food Facts, and you know that our mission is to make food information accessible, free, and open to everyone.
But food data isn’t the only type of data that plays a central role in our daily lives. We’re also surrounded by objects: electronics, personal care products, DIY supplies, textiles, furniture…

Today, we’re celebrating a major milestone: Open Products Facts has just surpassed the 40,000-product mark!

🔍 What is Open Product Facts?

What started as an April Fools’ Day prank that turned into something very serious, Open Products Facts is an open, free, and collaborative database that tackles the challenges of the circular economy.

When we buy complex items (from smartphones to lawn mowers to furniture) we often lack the information needed to make them last. For every product, a plan! The current linear model of consumption all too often ends in disposal. Open Products Facts provides the data needed to ensure that every product has a future beyond its initial use. We want to answer the crucial questions that every citizen asks:

  • How should I take care of it?
  • Can it be repaired?
  • Where can it be reused?
  • How can it be recycled responsibly?
  • Where can I donate my item?
  • … And the list goes on!

Open Products Facts centralizes this data and these circular solutions to help you better understand an object’s lifecycle and take action to reduce your consumption.

Key features for responsible consumption

Thanks to collective intelligence, Open Products Facts offers practical tools:

  • Repairability Index: Easily compare your devices. Does an iPhone become easier to repair over time? Our data helps answer these questions.
  • Carbon Footprint: Understand the environmental impact of manufacturing our everyday items (did you know that among its various environmental impacts, buying a new smartphone emits about 80 kg of CO2?).
  • End-of-Life Guide: Where to recycle? Where to donate? Where to find spare parts? Open Products Facts connects repair and reuse providers through our integration with ADEME’s “Que Faire de Mes Objets” service.
  • Folksonomy & AI: Thanks to folksonomy and AI, we can categorize and model any object.

🙏 Crucial support: Thank you to the AFNIC Foundation!

AFNIC is the organization that makes .fr domain names possible. By choosing .fr, you help the AFNIC Foundation support public-interest digital projects, such as Open Food Facts.

Thank you for helping us build this digital commons!

🛠️ How can you join the adventure?

40,000 products is a good start, but there are still millions left to document! You can contribute in several ways:

  1. Scan your items: Download the Open Food Facts app and add the products around you (even those without barcodes!).
  2. Fill out the product profiles: Add the product name, category, a link to the user manual, repairability score, photos, and more.
  3. Spread the word: The bigger the database, the more useful it becomes for you!

Join us at openproductsfacts.org and in our Slack community, and together, let’s make our products more sustainable!
